Judging Panel and Process

The independent judging panel will consist of renowned names in the dental and facial sector. Dr Christopher Orr, one of the UK’s most well known aesthetic dentists, will chair the panel. All entries will then be shortlisted in each category.  The shortlists will be announced in mid January in Aesthetic Dentistry Today and Dentistry magazine.

Every award winning entry will then be put forward for the overall Smile Award of the Year.

The independent judging panel will consist of:

Dr Christopher Orr
Dr Orr is one of the UK's most prominent cosmetic dentists, who practises cosmetic and restorative dentistry in a multidisciplinary clinic in central London. He is a graduate of the Queen's University of Belfast and an Accredited Member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD) and also a Certified Member of the European Society of Cosmetic Dentistry. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, founder and Past President of the BACD as well as being a Past President of the Odontological Section of the Royal Society of Medicine.



Dr Linda Greenwall

Dr Greenwall is a specialist in Prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry and runs a multi disciplinary private practice in Hampstead, London. She is Editor-in-Chief of Aesthetic Dentistry Today. She is a founding member and chairman of the British Dental Bleaching Society, the author of the e-learning programme called the Bleaching Business. Her third textbook on bleaching is coming out in late summer with Quintessence publishing and written together with Dr So-Ran Kwon.




Dr Mervyn Druian
Dr Druian is a leader, lecturer and innovator in preventive dentistry and has over 30 years of experience in dentistry. He has a special interest in the field of periodontal disease, cosmetic dentistry and treating halitosis. He is also on the editorial board of ‘FMC Publications’, and is current Chairman of the ‘Private Practitioners Group’ and involved with the ‘Alpha Omega’ Dental Society. He has been Hon. Secretary of the British Dental Editors Forum for the past 10 years. For the past few years Mervyn has been the principle dentist featured in the ‘Extreme Makeover UK’ programme.



Dr Simon Andrews
Dr Andrews qualified at Guy’s Hospital in 1981. He has been a practice principal with his wife
running a mixed practice since 1983. He left the NHS in 1992 and gained MFGDP in 1991. He has built a private practice specialising in cosmetic dentistry over the last few years. He opened the Smile Spa with Sue in 2006 and since then the practice has won nine national awards including: Private Dentistry’s Best Smile makeover in 2006, Dentistry’s Best Practice North East and Best Team UK and Private Dentistry’s Best Employer in 2007.



Dr Moira Wong
Dr Wong co-ordinates the exchange of orthodontic registrars between Guy's Hospital, London, Shanghai Medical University, China. She completed her Orthodontic training at Guys hospital and moved to Kings College Hospital and St George's Hospital where she completed her consultant training. Currently at 42 The Dental Practice, she is dedicated to providing specialist orthodontic services usually of a multi-disciplinary nature to both adults and children.




Dr Sue Andrews
Dr Sue Andrews qualified with Simon at Guy’s Hospital in 1981. She has been a practice principal since 1983, gained MFGDP in 1991 and has been an active member of the local LDC. She opened The Smile Spa in 2006 alongside her husband and has trained extensively in cosmetic dentistry and facial aesthetics. She has particular interests in management of anxious patients and practice management, as well as lecturing on facial aesthetics.




Dr Neil Counihan
Dr Counihan is one of the UK's leading orthodontists. He qualified in dentistry at Kings College Hospital London then studied orthodontics at New York University. In 1995 on returning from the United States he was invited to join one of London's most modern straightwire practices. Neil is now the co-founder of Elleven Orthodontics in London's West End (Practice of the Year and Best Specialist Referral winner in 2005). Neil is an international lecturer on orthondontics.





Alice Hart-Davis
Alice is an award-winning beauty journalist who writes for publications including Observer Woman, the Daily Telegraph, the Daily Mail, the Mail on Sunday’s YOU magazine, Red and London’s Evening Standard. With her eldest daughter, she has written a book for teenagers on hair, skincare and make-up, called Be Beautiful (Walker Books) - and yes, it includes a few pages on how to look after your teeth.






Professor Iain Hutchison
Professor Hutchinson is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at Bart’s and The Royal London Hospitals specialising in Head and Neck Cancer and Reconstruction. He is also responsible
for the registered research charity Saving Faces based at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London in 2000.






Dr Andrew Moore

Andrew qualified in 1988 and has been established in general practice in Chelmsford Essex since 1989. Andrew was also one of the first UK dentists to achieve the Diploma in Implant
Dentistry awarded by the Royal College of Surgeons and accepts implant referrals from many other dentists. Advance Dental Clinic specialises in high quality dental treatments, cosmetic dentistry, rthodontics, Periodontics and Implantology. The practice was awarded the prestigious
Private Dentistry’s ‘Best New Practice’ at the Practice of the Year Awards 2004.


Dr Komal Suri
Dr Suri practices in Wendover, Buckinghamshire at Smile Design Dental Practice. The main focus of her practice is complex restorative and aesthetic dentistry. She is currently involved in
teaching with the Aesthetic Advantage Hands-On programs, London. She has completed and passed the written examination for Accreditation into the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.




Dr Gertrude Huss
Dr Huss qualified as a dentist from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa in 1993 and then completed her DRDP at the Eastman Dental Institute in 2005. She acquired and created the exclusive Hill Street Clinic in Jersey (Channel Islands) in 2008 where she has merged the aesthetic world of dentistry and medicine.

She is internationally recognised as a prominent practitioner in the non-surgical cosmetic industry and is frequently invited to lecture in facial aesthetics at international conferences. Most recently she has been cited as one of the experts in her field by society magazine Tatler.


Luke Barnett
Luke started his career in technical dentistry in 1976, and after qualifying took a specialist interest in dental ceramics setting up his own business in 1985. Luke and his team have established themselves as one of the UK`s most influential ceramic specialists working out of his state of the art facility in Watford, Herts. He is a founding member of the BACD and was Chairman of the laboratory committee up to November 2007, he remains on the Board of directors at sub-committee level and sits on in Accreditation board of examiners. He is the first Technician to achieve the levels of excellence required to obtain BACD Accreditation. He is a sustaining member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.


Tony Knight
Qualifying as a technician at Guy’s Hospital in 1981, Tony has run his own laboratory specialising
in cosmetic dentistry and implantology since 1985. Awarded Best UK Laboratory in the Private Dentistry Awards 2007 and 2005 and UK Laboratory of the Year 2008 and 2004 in the Probe/ BDHF Awards. Tony is chair of the BACD technicians committee and co-chair of the membership committee. He teaches smile design and advanced aesthetic restorations on several postgraduate courses.



Dr Peter Ilori
Peter is a specialist in Orthodontics and Facial Aesthetics. In 2001, he was awarded the MBA with distinction from Brunel University. He is the founder/ owner of The Beauty Society and is involved in the development of aesthetic and cosmetic enhancement protocols. His credentials as an innovator and entrepreneur have been recognised through numerous awards including:Winner of the Private Dentistry 2004, Most Innovative and Most Attractive Practice Awards and Winner of the Dentistry Awards 2007 - Best South East Practice. He is a member of the AAO, WFO, BOS and AFA.



Dr Bob Khanna
Dr Bob Khanna is a Cosmetic and Reconstructive Dental Surgeon. He runs clinics in Ascot, Harley Street, Manchester and Reading and carries out a full spectrum of treatments from Aesthetic Dentistry, Surgical Implantology and bone regeneration procedures to full mouth rehabilitation.

He was one of the first dentists in the World to venture into facial aesthetic procedures utilising Botulinum Toxin and Dermal Fillers over 12 years ago. Shortly after, due to his unparalleled success with such treatments he pioneered the concept of hands on training courses for other medical and dental professional colleagues.


Dr James Russell
Dr James Russell is a director of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and has been awarded the highly prestigious BACD Accreditation in recognition of excellence in cosmetic dentistry, the youngest dentist to achieve this and one of only 8 in the UK.

James's work has been widely published in the dental press and he regularly lectures and instructs dentists on the art and science of cosmetic dentistry. Recently, he has helped develop new techniques for the ethical provision of cosmetic dentistry. James also provides advice and treatment on Channel 4's Embarrassing Bodies program.

James is a Director of Straight-Talk Seminars, which is the only provider of the Inman Aligner Certification courses.



Dr Nikhil Sisodia
Dr Sisodia graduated from Bristol University in 1995 and, after a year as Senior House Officer in Restorative Dentistry and several years in general practice in London, he is now a partner at Ten the Pavement Dental Health. He is a Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantology, member of the International Team for Implantology, member of the Association of Dental Implantology and of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. He is also President-elect of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.




Dr Shameek Popat
Dr Shameek Popat qualified from Guy’s Hospital in 1993 and obtained his MFGDP from the Royal College of Surgeons in 1998. Over the last 15 years he has worked hard to build upon his knowledge, his experience, his skills and his reputation to be one of the most outstanding and highly respected Private Dentists in the UK. He is also a senior instructor for the Californian Institute of Cosmetic Dentistry (CCADS UK), an active member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD) and a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). He is also a member of the British Dental Association, General Dental Council, British Dental Health Foundation and the British Society of Occlusal Studies. Over the years he has also been called upon by many media and press, seeking his comments and his expert advice.
